During the semester, we had two guest presentations by students, (one on the importance of voting, one anti-bullying), opportunities to work with COMPanions, and three extra credit opportunities ("Start Something that Matters," John Strelecky's presentation on Life Safari, and the Majors Fair).
In a blog of approximately 500 words, write a review of one of these events/ activities. Your audience is your classmates who may or may not have attended the same event. Your purpose is to explain the event/activity and to share why it was meaningful to you, why it was useful to you, how you will remember it or use the skills or information you gleaned from it. Your thesis is your own ...

Blog Four: Due no later than November 29th
So, it’s either 2041 (thirty years from now) or 1981 (thirty years ago). You are a first year college student.
Describe with detail what you imagine your average school day would be like from the time you wake up to the time you go to sleep. What technology would you be using (or missing)? What kind of transportation and communication would be available? Fashion? Food? What would a classroom be like, and what would you be learning about? Go through your day step by step and make these considerations. If you go to the past, remember to research the details to avoid anachronisms!
This is your final blog of the semester (Blog Five will be optional and for extra credit), so let your imagination run wild and have some fun with the concept and the language. Remember, you only have to write on one day in one year … future or past?

Blog Three: Due by Tuesday, November 1st
Food Ads
Advertisements are all around us! What do you consider effective in an advertising strategy? Why do you or do you not buy a product? What name brands do you buy? Have you considered the generic alternative? Are you swayed by celebrity endorsements? Do jingles get stuck in your head?
I want you to find and choose an ad for a food product, restaurant, or group (print, web, television, radio ... any medium) and describe it to an audience who hasn't seen it. If you can embed it or provide a link to it, so much the better, but assume your audience hasn't seen/heard it.
Then, evaluate the ad itself for the "argument" it makes ... how does it attempt to persuade the audience to buy the product, to "buy" the argument? Is it colors, a jingle, or a familiar face? Is it a new product from a recognized brand-line? Is it manipulative or bordering on the untruthful? Have fun with this!

Blog Two: Environmental Footprint
Blog Two: Due Tuesday, September 27th
Visit the above website and calculate your personal ecological footprint (base it on your life at home before you came to FGCU; you may need to consult someone in your household for some of the answers.).
First in your blog entry, list the number of earths it would take to provide resources/global acres to support your lifestyle. Then, define a footprint and explain how it relates to the broader concept of sustainability. How do we use this measure to interpret our life choices? Finally, and most importantly, select one area where you can reduce your own footprint. Explain your choice and live with it for a week, keeping notes on your success or failure. You will have the chance to address the changes you’ve made in a later assignment.

Blog One: Introductions
Due Tuesday, August 30th
Successful writers know their audience, subject matter, reason for writing, and the conventions of standard written English. If your audience is your classmates, your subject matter is yourself, and your reason for writing is to introduce yourself, what would you write? What would you chose to include and what would you exclude? For Tuesday, write a brief (between 300-500 words) introduction to yourself so that we can get to know each other quickly. Consider what you want to know about your classmates when constructing your introduction. Remember, you'll have a chance to ask questions and respond to each others' introductions in the comments part of the blog entries.
